Remarkable and haunting

This is a real hidden gem and it's a crime it hasn't had better reviews. The overarching theme of poverty, being left behind and desperation was heart breaking, and I was rooting for all of the characters who, despite their best efforts, never seem to win. The cinematography was beautiful and Matt Smith made the right choice to not carry on with Dr who to go for roles like this. He and Ben Mandelson play insidious and ruthless bad guys with tremendous strength. The dancing scene was particularly chilling, my heart was in my mouth. Eva Mendes and christina Hendricks were stunning in this and the shame and loss Hendricks portrays was relatable as a mother who cannot support or provide for her children. Ronan played the love interest to de caestecker and she was understated and subtle, but still managed to exude power. This film portrayed the on going decay of middle america, and was powerful in its presentation. I hope the reviews haven't dissuaded ryan gosling from writing or directing because this was a very special film. I'd love to see more directing from him as I think he's an untapped talent in this regard.

beautiful dark fairy tale

This movie is a beautiful metaphor, a dark fairy tale where a mythological hero needs to break the spell to save a society in decadence. The setting is a city in decay ruled by evil and violence (if you love abandoned places and urban exploration you will love this movie). The soundtrack is a piece of art. The moment where the young lovers dance in an abandoned building is one of the most beautiful shots I have seen lately. The lovers need to fight to find hope in a place where society is in decay and people are trapped by sadness. The lake is a metaphor of the past, under the water lives the lost world, the things that we lost, the past that is still haunting us. I was a bit skeptical about Ryan Gosling's debut as a director, but I must say that he has surprised me. You need to watch this movie as it is, a fairy tale and a metaphor of today's decadent society.

Not Bad for Gosling's Directorial Debut

As a freshman director, Ryan Gosling shows promise here. This is a quirky, Art-house film (of which there aren't enough, lately) with Lynchian elements (Blue Velvet; Lost Highway) Some of them work, others don't ("Dave" singing "Cool Water" was a bit silly).Casting was OK, with solid performances from Iain De Caestecker,Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, and the beautiful Eva Longoria in particular. Landyn Stewart is adorable! Where did they get this kid? Matt Smith's performance was appropriately over-the-top, and scary. Overall, I'd recommend 'Lost River,' because it consistently held my interest, and had a great story-line. I look forward to more Gosling-directed efforts, as I see great potential there. I'm rating it a little higher than the average, because I'd really urge people to see it, and, as I said earlier, there should be more movies in this peculiar genre.
